Since the WWI onward all wars can be labeled as “Total War” more or less due to the fact that the war exceeds dramatically its battleground limits and incorporates all martial, political, economic, social, cultural and demographic resources of a nation into itself. In this view the Eight-Years War, imposed by Iraq on Iran, was also a “Total War” particularly for the Iranian side. Astan-e Qods-e Razavi (the trusteeship institution for Imam Reza’s (p.b.u.h) Holy Shrine) as a well-established and religious-social-economic institution pied its contribution along the Eight-Year War. In this regard the central problem to this article is elucidating various aspects of the institution’s participation in the war through archival sources. To achieve the mentioned goal this text relying on unpublished archival documents and oral history interviews approaches it problem through a describing-explicating method. Accordingly Astan-e Qod’s participation in the Eight-Year War is constituted of five main categories namely war logistics, war advertisements, war asylum-seekers, “Daftar-e Jebhe va Jang” (the War and Frontline Office), and devotees affairs a pentagon model which in itself still includes more nine sub-categories.
